"Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28, New Living Translation)
"On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation." (Genesis 2:2–3, NLT)
HOW DO WE TAKE THAT WEEKLY WITHDRAWAL FROM WORK?
- Take one day a week to REST!"The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary." (Isaiah 40:28, NLT)
- Don't get too focused on rules."The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath!" (Mark 2:27–28, NLT)
- Make time for what is truly important."Jesus went into the synagogue again and noticed a man with a deformed hand. Since it was the Sabbath, Jesus' enemies watched him closely. If he healed the man's hand, they planned to accuse him of working on the Sabbath." (Mark 3:1–2, NLT)"Does the law permit good deeds on the Sabbath, or is it a day for doing evil? Is this a day to save life or to destroy it?" But they wouldn't answer him." (Mark 3:4, NLT)"He looked around at them angrily and was deeply saddened by their hard hearts. Then he said to the man, "Hold out your hand." So the man held out his hand, and it was restored!" (Mark 3:5, NLT)"There remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God," (Hebrews 4:9, English Standard Version)
- Find freedom from bondage."Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath day. A woman was there who, for eighteen years, had an evil spirit in her that made her crippled. Her back was always bent; she could not stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, "Woman, you are free from your sickness." (Luke 13:10–12, New Century Version)"This woman that I healed, a daughter of Abraham, has been held by Satan for eighteen years. Surely it is not wrong for her to be freed from her sickness on a Sabbath day!" (Luke 13:16, NCV)
